Wellbeing – Resilience & Helping Others

Welcome to Audio Learning from Assemble You.

1 – Identifying and Helping Others Who Need It

The Beatles became as successful as they were in large part because of George Martin, their producer, who was often referred to as the fifth Beatle. Not only would Martin make suggestions about which songs should go on their albums, the groundbreaking recording techniques he used created some of the iconic instrumentals on their most famous songs. And Elton John wouldn’t have risen to fame without his long-term collaboration with Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics to most of Elton John’s songs.

While these are exceptional examples of how the help of others can impact someone’s life, helping others with more day-to-day activities can be as powerful for the person you are helping as grand gestures or a one-time fix can have. This is especially true if someone is struggling with their mental health and well-being, and is depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or worried. And besides the obvious ‘they need help’ motive for helping someone, there are plenty of other reasons to lend a helping hand.

In this track, we look at how to identify people that may need help, and discuss some simple ways you can help those in need.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn some of the telltale signs that somebody might benefit from your help
  • Learn some of the simple ways you can bring pleasure and help someone who needs it

Aimed At:

  • Anyone who suspects a friend or colleague may be struggling and wants to know how to be sure, and what to do to help.

2 – The Art of Resilience

Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness; the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events.” Whether it’s fighting a wrong in the world, making a name for ourselves, or the everyday stresses of work, family, and the countless other obligations we have, we all face challenges. But we have to be able to overcome these adversities, adjust our course, and recover our spirits so we can press on with our lives and goals, and accomplish what we’ve set out to do.

In this track, we draw on history to help us understand resilience, and look at some practical techniques to help anyone become more resilient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what resilience is
  • Learn why resilience is important
  • Learn actionable, easy-to-implement techniques that will help you build your resilience

Aimed At:

  • Anybody who wants to learn to handle, and grow from, adversity.

3 – Make Time for You

If you’ve been feeling stressed out, anxious, or overwhelmed lately, you’re not alone. Today’s fast-paced, high-demand world requires us to manage so much and all at once. But, with a little tweak to your daily routine, you can more easily deal with what’s being thrown at you. You can calm down, slow down, and de-stress by making more time for yourself.

That’s right, make time for yourself. Sounds simple, but how do we actually take a step back from our busy lives and practice self-care?

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how saying no can open up time for important self-care
  • Learn meditating even for just a few minutes a day can have great benefits
  • Learn how physical activity enables positive mood
  • Learn how a good sleep pattern contributes to a calm mind

Aimed At:

  • Anybody who is struggling to find time for themselves, or is frazzled, anxious, or even depressed due to having too many commitments and not enough time for self-care.

4 – Starting the Day the Right Way

What does your morning look like? Do you hit the snooze button on your alarm several times before finally dragging yourself out of bed? Do you rush around, trying not to be late? Are you guzzling coffee, trying to stay awake? Or do you feel stressed out and anxious before your day even begins?

Mornings are difficult and can be hectic as we try to get the kids ready for school, review a work presentation, answer the litany of emails that keep pinging our phones, and deal with any number of other disturbances. But there’s a better way. Even if you have a busy day ahead of you and are pressed for time, making just a few small changes to your morning routine will get your day off to a better start.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about the influence bad morning habits can have on the rest of your day
  • Learn actionable techniques to make the most of your morning

Aimed At:

  • Anyone who sees themselves as a night owl, struggles to get up in the morning, or simply wants to start the day more effectively.
